Renewals

If you do nothing, this is the plan you wake up in

Carriers retire plans every year and file a crosswalk saying where current members go. Auto-renewal is quiet, and the plan on the other side of it can have a different deductible, a different network and a different price.

Plan crosswalk

Where does my current plan go next year?

When a carrier retires a plan it files a crosswalk telling the Marketplace which plan to move you to. Enter the plan ID from your card, and we price the successor for you rather than just printing its number.

14 characters: five-digit issuer, two-letter state, seven digits. On your insurance card and on every Marketplace notice.

Used only to price both plans after the credit.

What a crosswalk actually changes

A crosswalk keeps you insured. It does not keep you in the same plan. The four things worth checking before you let one happen to you:

The network

A crosswalk into a different product is the one that bites. Products carry networks, so a new product number can mean your hospital is out of network on January 1 with no letter that says so in those words.

The formulary

Drug tiers are set per plan. A medication that was a $10 generic copay can land on a coinsurance tier in the successor plan without either plan doing anything wrong.

The metal tier

A Bronze to Silver crosswalk is a real thing and it cuts both ways. Silver is the only tier that carries cost-sharing reductions, so under 250% of the federal poverty level it can be a large upgrade. The premium before the credit will be higher.

The credit

The premium tax credit is pinned to the second-lowest-cost Silver plan in your county, and that benchmark moves every year. Your plan can hold its price while your credit falls, which shows up as a bigger bill for the same coverage. That is why this tool prices both years rather than just naming the successor.
